Why walnut causes decrease of platelets in blood?
Walnuts are one of the common household food items widely used for their abilities to improve cognitive and heart health. For eg., walnuts are the single largest plant source of omege-3 fat which when consumed can lower ones risk of dying from heart disease. But not everyone gets the same health benefits as not everything is created equal for everyone. One such man in his 70’s ate some walnuts that landed him in the hospital. Thankfully, he was able to recover well with all blood parameters stable again after few days.
What happened?
The man presented himself to the doctor after a night of nausea, vomiting and fever . Upon testing his blood parameters, it was found that the platelets count in the blood was 37x10⁹ per liter.
What are platelets?
Platelets, also called thrombocytes are tiny cells in the blood that functions to help our body form clots to stop bleeding when blood vessels gets damaged. A perfect example of this is when a cut happens, the platelets bind to the site of the damaged blood vessel, thereby causing a blood clot to fix the damage and prevent us from bleeding.
