Refrigerators keep our foods safe, cool and lasting. One of your friend who is a bit of slacker and boaster says that he is cooling his bedroom with his refrigerator. You being a science enthusiast finds it hard to believe and proves him wrong with the following arguments.

Important parts of the refrigerator:

  1. Compressor
  2. Condenser
  3. Throttling device
  4. Evaporator

You give further explanation of what these does to prove that it is impossible to cool the whole bedroom using the refrigerator and in fact the opposite happens as the room becomes hotter.

  1. Compressor: This is the heart of the refrigerator which compresses the coolant (refrigerant) vapor from low pressure to high pressure vapor by compression. This raises the temperature of the refrigerant.
  2. Condenser: The high pressure vapor from compressor is converted to liquid by passing it through condenser which is basically coiled tubes wherein the heat is released and the vapor is condensed to high pressure liquid
  3. Throttling device: This is the critical part of the refrigeration system wherein the high pressure cooling liquid is throttled through coiled tubes and evaporation of the liquid takes place with noticeable drop in temperature.
  4. Evaporator: The evaporated liquid becomes further vaporized by passing though the evaporator. This is the place where the absorption of heat from the food takes place and keep the refrigerator cool inside.

This low pressure vapor then reaches the compressor and the cycle continues which is called vapor compression cycle. Here you explain your friend that in the overall process, heat is only getting dissipated to the surrounding to keep the contents inside the refrigerator cool. If the refrigerator is kept open to cool the room, the compressor is going to produce more heat making the room even hotter. Your friend admits his lie and both of you move on life.
